I captured this photograph while visiting Devil’s Postpile National Monument. It wasn’t easy to find the right position for the composition I envisioned, but I was determined to get it just right.

When I finally pressed the shutter, I knew I had something special. That feeling was confirmed when the image went on to win first place in a photo competition.
